Your brand’s universe is made of products, but also of visualizations and representations that can trigger interest in the customer. This is why the design of the packaging of your cosmetic products, and in particular that of the label, is a crucial step in achieving the sensory experience you are trying to offer.

But captivating the customer is not the only purpose of the label, it must also be informative and contain a number of elements; it is subject to mandatory regulations. Through this article, we will reveal the secrets of the two aspects that good labeling must satisfy: Marketing-Branding, and Regulatory.

1. Marketing and Branding aspect

The graphic design of the label represents the envelope and visual identity of your product. This is what your customer will see first before they even try the product.

It is therefore crucial to choose the colors, styles, and fonts that you want to adopt. When choosing your brand’s color palette, it’s important to stay true to yourself while standing out from the crowd: find a color palette that will not only jump out in the eyes of customers, but can also be immediately associated with your brand. In addition, the style adopted can be either minimalist or hyper stylized, and the typeface should be unique, it should accurately represent your brand, and it should be immediately recognizable to your customers.

A good label is the embodiment of the art of design: aesthetic and practical. It must be able to captivate a potential customer at first glance, but also meet the challenge of sustainability in their bathroom, in the long term.

It must also be printed on the product in indelible characters, easily legible and visible. Therefore, the choice of label material is just as important. The material chosen should be impermeable to oil and water to optimize the stabilization of the print, and it is important to avoid any material which is not strong enough and which quickly crumbles on contact with water or oil. 2. Legal aspect

Legally, a cosmetic product label is required to contain a number of indications, printed on the product “in indelible characters, easily legible and visible”. In Morocco, they are defined by the Board of Medicines and Pharmacy, which is affiliated to the Ministry of Health.

The list of ingredients is the most important indication. They must be mentioned in decreasing order of their weight at the time of their incorporation, preceded by the word “ingredients”. This list may appear on the packaging only. (If this is not practical, a leaflet, label, strip or card attached or attached contains the list of these ingredients to which the consumer is referred, either by an abbreviated indication or by a symbol which appears on the packaging .)

Then come other mandatory indications:

  • The name and address of your brand
  • The country of origin
  • The content at the time of packaging, indicated in mass or volume
  • The period after opening (PAO) & The date of minimum durability (DDM) (if the PAO is under 30 months)
  • Special precautions for use, (if necessary, appearing on a leaflet, or an attached card)
  • The batch number of manufacture or the reference allowing the identification of the manufacture

Depending on the destination country of your cosmetic products, your label may be required to contain additional mandatory information. For example, to market your products within the European Union: Article 19 of the European Cosmetic Regulation, which defines the rules for a compliant cosmetic label, states that it is mandatory for a company located outside of the EU, to designate a Responsible Person (RP) in Europe, and to mention their address in order to place your product on the market.

A final important point is that of the logos of the certifications and labels available to your cosmetic product; they must appear on the label. They guarantee cosmetics that meet requirements (environment, Halal, etc.), but also perfectly safe, effective and pleasant to use. They thus allow you to position yourself more easily on premium quality cosmetic products, with greater traceability. Discover our article about certifications and labels.
