Prodigia-Collagen

From the Greek word “kolla” which means “glue”, Collagen owes its name to its property ensuring cohesion between the different cells, a bit like a glue. This relatively recent protein has been increasingly prevalent in the well-being and cosmetics industry since the 80s.

What is Collagen? What history does it carry? How to explain its growing market share? And finally, why and how to integrate it into your natural cosmetic formulations? Prodigia brings you all the answers and more in this article:

What is Collagen?

Collagen is an insoluble fibrous structural protein found in the extracellular matrix and in several body tissues. It is synthesized from amino acids, glycine, hydroxyproline and arginine. It promotes brain health, prevents bone loss, relieves joint pain, increases muscle mass, enhances hair and nail growth, and improves skin strength and elasticity.

With age, pollution, or intensive sport, the human body begins to lack collagen. Its production deteriorates and collagen loses quality (its production decreases by about 1% per year from the age of 30), hence the signs of skin aging for example.

What history?

Although we can trace the first uses of collagen in a beauty cream to the year 1936, the intensification of its use by the cosmetics industry is from the 70s and 80s. This makes Collagen a protein that is relatively new in the world of beauty, health, and well-being. It was when European researchers became aware of its potential benefits for the treatment of joint problems, loss of bone density, that Western scientists became interested in its uses in cosmetics. And since then, the Collagen Revolution has begun, giving birth to an impressive economic growth.

Why and how to incorporate it into your natural cosmetic formulations?

For skin:

In addition to providing resistance and elasticity to the skin, Collagen is film-forming, softening and protective. It improves the hydration of the skin, and provides a very soft and very comfortable touch to the creams.

Mainly recommended for dry skin, skin prone to discomfort, and mature skin; Collagen is the perfect key ingredient to incorporate into your formulations of: eye contour care, youth care, “anti-crocodile skin” body care, and protective hand creams.

For hair:

Collagen is an excellent thickener for the hair and eyelashes. In addition to sheathing, strengthening and nourishing the hair, it acts as a protector against external aggressions.

Mainly indicated for fine hair and for thin and sparse eyelashes, you can integrate Collagen as a key ingredient in your formulations of: strength and volume conditioners, volumizing styling products, volume mascara, or eyelash care.
