Article 4 of the series: Launching new cosmetic products

In a field as competitive as natural cosmetics, innovation and originality are the secret of success. This is the reason why it is essential for your brand to launch new products, and to surprise your customers. And given the current trend in facial serums, Prodigia encourages you to create some, with the help of our expertise, and to launch these new products with guaranteed success.

It’s not something that people really knew even 5 or 6 years ago, today the demand is more important than ever. If this type of product intimidates you and you’re not sure where to start to create one, here’s everything you need to know about serums.

What is a serum?

It is a liquid, and sometimes even slightly viscous, product that is quickly absorbed by the skin of the face. The serum is thicker than a tonic or micellar water, but lighter than a cream, lotion, or even fluid. This is a very concentrated product, usually more than any other product that can be applied to our skin. Serums have to be personalized, that is, they are used to treat or address specific needs – so there really isn’t a one-size-fits-all serum that can benefit everyone. This is why it is a good idea to categorize them by main ingredient, since it is the main ingredient that will determine its action and who it is intended for. A winning duo to be combined with day and night creams, it boosts their effectiveness, providing immediate and lasting beauty results.

How to make a serum?

The manufacturing process must be done cold in order to protect the assets. Taking the time to use this method makes it possible not to heat the raw materials and not to denature their active properties.
You must first select the type of target serum: aqueous or oily. Then choose your vegetable and essential oils, its bases, and its assets; according to the objectives and the target clientele. There is a calculation to be made for the safety of the skin, because it is necessary to respect the doses of essential oils. Thus, it should not exceed 2% of the bottle (1 ml of essential oil = 35 to 40 drops).

What are the best compositions?

Oily or very aqueous, the formula of a serum is first of all rich in ingredients that promote hydration such as glycerin, urea, hyaluronic acid and of course vegetable oils which with their fatty acid composition essential and vitamins play a very important role of active nutrients. The serum does not contain a sun filter and / or occlusive agents. It must penetrate the epidermis to provide its precious dose of active ingredients.

Aqueous serums deeply hydrate thanks to their composition which consists mainly of water, active ingredients (such as hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, etc.), pure aloe vera gel, and floral water (Orange Blossom Water or Rose Water …).

Oily serums are best used in the evening, opt for a synergistic composition of vegetable and essential oils, depending on the properties you are targeting; nourishing, moisturizing, healing, anti-aging … For a healing synergy for example, Prodigia recommends a mixture of rosehip vegetable oil, prickly pear seed vegetable oil, bitter almond vegetable oil and vitamin E.

Which packaging for your serums ?

For your serums, use pipettes or droppers. With much less risk of oxidation, the dropper is a packaging that ensures a long life for your products and reduces the risk of contamination.
Vials and glass bottles are the standard for sera. Tinted glass (amber, glass or bluish) is recommended so that the contents are protected from light and do not suffer any deterioration. Being easy to clean, even at high temperatures, glass containers are easily reused, giving an elegant, even luxurious touch to the product.
