Launch natural soaps

Article of the series : Launch new cosmetic products

As you know, launching new cosmetic products can be particularly challenging if you don’t know all the tips, but don’t panic! Prodigia is dedicating this new series of articles tailored to guide you in your new endeavor..

This first article in this series will help you better navigate the launch of a new line of soaps; the new favorite among fans of natural cosmetics. This is indeed the very promising market: soap is in the process of freeing itself from its classic role of simple cleanser; you can transform your soaps into skincare, moisturizers, anti-aging, emollients; depending on the oils, milks, and ingredients you choose to incorporate in it. Expand your brand by creating new lines of soaps, or add them to one of your existing lines in a creative, simple, and elegant way.

In this article, discover all the secrets to launching your new soaps: uses, manufacturing processes, compositions, customizations, and packaging.

Manufacturing processes

To create your soaps, you can adopt one of these three methods:

1- Cold process soap
The cold process is the most popular technique for making soap. It involves mixing an alkali (usually soda) with fats or oils. Once mixed and shaped, it takes several weeks for the soap to be ready.

2- Hot process soap
The hot process is a technique that involves cooking the soap. This method does not require standing time and it may be easier to add perfumes and dyes to it. However, hot soap is more difficult to work and mold.

3- Salting-out
The salting-out soap is a heated soap from which the glycerin is removed. This method involves adding salt to the soapy water to precipitate the soap (which is very little or not at all soluble in salt water). The salting-out soap is intended for laundry : machine washing, delicate laundry or baby’s washable diapers. Its advantage for laundry is the absence of glycerin which will prevent clogging the pores of clothes or the pipes of washing machines and sinks.

In cosmetics, Prodigia recommends cold saponification, because of its ability to preserve the properties of the oils incorporated in your soaps.

Composition, stand out!

It is at the level of the composition that you can let your creative genius shine through: a 100% Moroccan originated composition appeals to a growing market of customers looking for authenticity in their beauty routines, even their soaps.
And the ideas are numerous; you can create your soaps from Moroccan vegetable oils: a classic like Virgin Argan Oil, or less classic but in increasing demand like Prickly pear seed oil. You can even opt for natural extracts.

Note, however, that the soap industry has now nearly banned a once-flagship ingredient: palm oil. Big brands like Lush have banned this ingredient from their soap base after learning about the disastrous social and environmental consequences caused by its production. In order to reduce your ecological footprint, we do not recommend incorporating it into your formulas.

Otherwise, the trends of the moment are less and less conventional: dare the milk of goat, camel, mare, or even donkey. Each of these milks has its own virtues: moisturizing, toning, softening, anti-aging, and even healing. Why not make your soaps stand out by incorporating these milks instead into your formulas?

Bet on the packaging

In the world of natural cosmetics, packaging offers you the privilege of standing out on the shelves of any point of sale. But you need to make the right choices! For soaps, the best options are the most environmentally friendly. And since the best waste is the one that is not produced at all, adopt Zero Waste for your range of soaps.
Kraft paper is a very good example of packaging options for soap: 100% biodegradable, its light weight does not prevent it from offering optimal resistance! In addition, since it does not undergo any chemical treatment, it does not affect its content in any way. A real good point, since the soap is directly in contact with its packaging. Koun is a Moroccan brand that offers recycled kraft paper for the packaging of your products. Otherwise, opt for boxes for assortments, cardboard boxes, or colored papers for a touch of finesse.
