Comedogenic oils, how to spot them?

No comments yet

In the world of natural cosmetics, vegetable oils are commonly used as an ingredient in many skin care products, and can offer a number of extremely effective skin care solutions.

When it comes to skin care, an important factor in deciding whether a natural oil is beneficial for the skin, and whether it can be a good staple for your products, is whether it is considered comedogenic or not. We tell you everything in this article!

What is a comedogenic oil?

A comedogenic oil is an oil which, applied to the skin, promotes the appearance of blackheads, microcysts and other pimples. That kind of oil will tend to clog the pores of the skin, promote the appearance of blemishes and worsen acne.

A comedo is a plug of debris and dirt that forms inside the pore; comedogenic ingredients should be avoided for acne-prone skin (if listed in highly comedogenic oils).

The comedogenicity index of oils

Each oil has a comedogenicity index which depends on 3 criteria: its freshness, its sensitivity to oxidation and its rate of penetration into the skin. An oil becomes more and more comedogenic as it oxidizes; it is a degradation of the fatty acids that compose the oil and will therefore alter its quality. Oxidation is the result of the oil being exposed to light, heat and air …

To be considered a non-comedogenic oil, it must be rated at 2 or less; therefore, for all acne-prone or blemish-prone skin, daily use on the face of vegetable oils with an index greater than 2 should be avoided.

Examples of comedogenic indices of some vegetable oils:
-Comedogenic index equal to 0: Argan Oil, Jojoba Oil.
-Comedogenic index equal to 1: Nigella Oil, Prickly Pear Seed Oil.
-Comedogenic index equal to 2: Sweet Almond Oil, Avocado Oil.
-Comedogenic index equal to 3: Rosehip Oil, Cocoa Butter.
-Comedogenic index equal to 4: Coconut oil, Linseed oil.
-Comedogenic index equal to 5: Wheat germ oil, Seaweed extract.

How to choose a quality vegetable oil?

A quality vegetable oil is an oil without added ingredients, pure, natural, obtained from a first cold pressing; these are the characteristics that you should target in your selection. Organic oils are often your best bet, and certifications help you make the best selections.

You also need to carefully select the vegetable oil for the targeted skin and hair types. For example, for oily, acne-prone or problematic skin, choose non-comedogenic oils with balancing and toning properties, which regulate sebum, and calm rashes and redness.

Also prefer oils stored in opaque bottles, thus better protected from light, with less risk of oxidation, and therefore of comedogenicity.
